The scaffold safety procedure requirements are given in detail with more specific information in the OSHA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/ARAMCO-SABIC-Standerd-OSHA-Proof-Tested-Scaffolding.php\">guidebook<\/a>. But the same safety requirements in this article are briefed<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirements for Scaffolds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"698\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/osha-scaffolding-safty-2.jpg\" alt=\"Scaffold Platform Construction\" class=\"wp-image-152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/osha-scaffolding-safty-2.jpg 698w, https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/osha-scaffolding-safty-2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Criteria Requirements for Suspended Scaffolds <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The safety criteria requirements for Suspended Scaffolds are as follows:<\/li><li>Only those items specifically designed as counterweights must be used.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Counterweights used for suspended scaffolds must be made of materials that cannot be easily dislocated. Flowable material, such as sand or water, cannot be used.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Counterweights must be secured by mechanical means to the outrigger beams.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vertical lifelines must not be fastened to counterweights.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>The materials like sand, masonry units, or rolls of roofing felt cannot be used for counterweights.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li><li>No. Such materials cannot be used as counterweights.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Outrigger beams (thrust-outs) must be placed perpendicular to their bearing support.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Tiebacks <strong>for outrigger beams, cornice hooks, roof hooks, roof irons, parapet clamps, or similar devices <\/strong>must be secured to a structurally sound anchorage on the building or structure. Sound anchorages do not include standpipes, vents, other piping systems, or electrical conduit.&nbsp;<\/li><li>A single tieback must be installed perpendicular to the face of the building or structure. Two tiebacks installed at opposing angles are required when a perpendicular tieback cannot be installed.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The suspension ropes must be long enough to allow the scaffold to be lowered to the level below without the rope passing through the hoist, or the end of the rope configured to prevent the end from passing through the hoist.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The scaffolding standard requirement prohibits using repaired wire.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Drum hoists must contain no less than four wraps of the rope at the lowest point.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Employers must replace wire rope when the following conditions exist: kinks; six randomly broken wires in one rope lay or three broken wires in one strand in one lay; one-third of the original diameter of the outside wires are lost; heat damage; evidence that the secondary brake has engaged the rope; and any other physical damage that impairs the function and strength of the rope.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Suspension ropes supporting adjustable suspension scaffolds must be a diameter large enough to provide sufficient surface area for the functioning of brake and hoist mechanisms.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Suspension ropes must be shielded from heat-producing processes.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Power-operated hoists used to raise or lower a suspended scaffold must be tested and listed by a qualified testing laboratory.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The stall load of any scaffold hoist must not exceed three times its rated load.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The stall load is the load at which the prime-mover (motor or engine) of power-operated hoist stalls or the power to the prime-mover is automatically disconnected.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Gasoline power-operated hoists or equipment are not permitted.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Drum hoists must contain no less than four wraps of suspension rope at the lowest point of scaffold travel.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Gears and brakes must be enclosed.&nbsp;<\/li><li>An automatic braking and locking device, in addition to the operating brake, must engage when a hoist makes an instantaneous change in momentum or an accelerated overspeed.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Manually operated hoists used to raise or lower a suspended scaffold must be tested and listed by a qualified testing laboratory.<\/li><li>These hoists require a positive crank force to descend.&nbsp;<\/li><li>No materials or devices may be used to increase the working height on a suspension scaffold. This includes ladders, boxes, and barrels.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Welding can be done from suspended scaffolds when<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2-1024x288.jpg\" alt=\"scaffolds\" class=\"wp-image-164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2-1024x288.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2-768x216.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2-1536x432.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/banner2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><em>A grounding conductor is connected from the scaffold to the structure and is at least the size of the welding lead;<\/em><\/li><li><em>The grounding conductor is not attached in series with the welding process or the workpiece;<\/em><\/li><li><em>An insulating material covers the suspension wire rope and extends at least four feet (1.2 meters) above the hoist;<\/em><\/li><li><em>Insulated protective covers cover the hoist;<\/em><\/li><li><em>The tail line is guided, retained, or both so that it does not become grounded;<\/em><\/li><li><em>Each suspension rope is attached to an insulated thimble; and<\/em><\/li><li><em>Each suspension rope and any other independent lines are insulated from grounding.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirements for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabianspar.com\/scaffolding-contract-services.php\">Access to Scaffolds<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Employers must provide access when the scaffold platforms are more than 2 feet (0.6 meters) above or below a point of access.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Direct access is acceptable when the scaffold is not more than 14 inches (36 centimeters) horizontally and not more than 24 inches (61centimeters) vertically from the other surfaces.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The scaffolding standard prohibits the use of cross-braces as a means of access.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Employees erecting and dismantling supported scaffolding must have a safe means of access provided when a competent person has determined the feasibility and analyzed the site conditions.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Some types of access are permitted to scaffolds, such as<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Ladders, such as portable, hook-on, attachable, and stairway,&nbsp;<\/li><li>Stair towers,<\/li><li>Ramps and walkways, and<\/li><li>Integral prefabricated frames&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirements Prohibit the Use of Some Types of Scaffolds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Shore and lean-to scaffolds are strictly prohibited.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Also, employees are prohibited from working on scaffolds covered with snow, ice, or other slippery materials, except to remove these substances.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The standard requires specific clearance distances between scaffolds and powerlines.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirements for Fall Protection from Scaffolds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Fall Protection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Fall protection includes guardrail systems and personal fall arrest systems. Personal fall arrest systems include harnesses, components of the harness\/belt such as Dee-rings, and snap hooks, lifelines, and anchorage points.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vertical or horizontal lifelines may be used.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Lifelines must be independent of support lines and suspension ropes and not attached to the same anchorage point as the support or suspension ropes.&nbsp;<\/li><li>When working from an aerial lift, attach the fall arrest system to the boom or basket.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Fall Protection Requirements for All Scaffolds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Employers must provide fall protection for each employee on a scaffold more than 10 feet (3.1 meters) above a lower level.&nbsp;<\/li><li>A competent person must determine the feasibility and safety of providing fall protection for employees erecting or dismantling supported scaffolds.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>The Type of Fall Protection Required for Specific Scaffolds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; chair, catenary, float, needle beam, ladder, and pump jack.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use fall arrest systems also when working from the boom\/basket of an aerial lift.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirement for Both Fall Arrest and Guardrail Systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each employee on a self-contained adjustable scaffold shall be protected by a guardrail system (with minimum 200-pound top-rail capacity) when the platform is supported by the frame structure, and by both a personal fall arrest system and a guardrail system (with minimum 200-pound top-rail capacity) when the platform is supported by ropes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Safety Requirement for Falling Object Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect employees from falling hand tools, debris, and other small objects, install toeboards, screens, guardrail systems, debris nets, catch platforms, canopy structures, or barricades.
